Name of Photographer: Maren Caruso
Personal Background
Maren Caruso is 46 years old and was born and raised in San Francisco, in the Haight Ashbury to be exact. Her first interaction with a camera was in highschool and she’s never put it down since. She went through UCLA’s fine arts undergraduate program. She also assisted many commercial photographers to help build her career. She recalls that she made plenty of mistakes. A big turning point in her life was when she decided to look into commercial photography, specifically food photography. This decision definitely shaped who she is as a photographer. Maren Caruso is culturally influenced by family dinners, an eclectic range of music, medical diagrams, spicy foods, fog and awkward moments.

Philosophy
Maren Caruso’s philosophy is less is more. She shoots photos that say more with less. She suggests that every has a sweet spot, and she challenges herself to find that sweet spot in everything she shoots. This is also one of the main ideas behind her work. Her work is definitely more on the personal side rather than political or social. Something that inspires her is bringing out texture and personality in an inanimate object. She also enjoys a bit of humor and imperfection in life and tries to incorporate that into her work. Having two young boys helps her channel her youth and brings out her playful side, which reflects on her work.

Influences
Maren Caruso has influenced my work in so many ways. The minute I saw her work I was simply in love with it. She inspires me to make my own photos unique, quirky, and creative. Personally, I think still-life photography is the best kind of photography. Maren is by far the best still-life photographer I’ve ever seen. Her creative attitude and unique photo ideas truly inspire me. I also think her philosophy is very interesting and it’s definitely something I agree with. The way she uses the idea that less is more in her photos is amazing.

Compare and Contrast:
I Think this photo is very similar to the original photo. My main focus was to create the bubbles and make the circle around the cup as precise as possible. I definitely believe I that I succeeded. The original photo by Maren Caruso looks a lot more natural. If is also edited much better. |
Compare and Contrast:
This photo is my least favorite of the three photos I recreated. Maren Caruso's photo is a lot more clear. I'm guessing she had a much better camera. I tried my best to make the lotion look as glossy as possible but I then realized it would be harder then I thought. I edited the photo to make it look pink rather than white. But, overall I think I did pretty good. |
Compare and Contrast:
This photo is by far my favorite out of the three photos I recreated. I think the colors of the jeans are very similar. I tried my best to make the arrangement of the jeans as similar as possible. I also included a pair of ripped jeans in the photo to make them look even more similar. The quality of Maren Caruso's photo is definitely better then mine, probably because she must have a much better camera. |
Personal Artist Statement:
I think that I really incorporated the elements and principles in my photos. In my first photo I really the shape of the circle. In my third photo I really focused on the geometric shape of the jeans. I would consider these objects to be positive shapes because they are the center piece of the photo. The rule of thirds is when you split the photo into thirds vertically and horizontally and the four points in the middle create a box. The photo of the coffee and jeans are following the rule of thirds because they are in the center of the photo.
